President Bush’s Proposed Health Care Tax Deduction

President Bush’s Proposed Health Care Tax Deduction

Nothing is more complex and difficult for politicians to deal with in this country than health care. Well, President Bush is about to enter the fray with a new proposal.

There are many controversial subjects in our country. From abortion to the death penalty to Iraq, there is plenty for everyone to get worked up regardless of their political affiliation or personal views. One subject that is less glamorous is health care. Frankly, our situation is a disgrace. By most measures, we are the wealthiest country in the world. Despite this fact, a huge number of us don’t have health care coverage.

When it comes to health care, more than a few politicians have crashed and burned. The issue is complex and expensive. There are no clean, clear answers. Throw in issues of political compromise and lobbying by medical groups and the picture gets much murkier. With incredibly low popularity numbers, President Bush apparently feels now is the time to swing for the fences. Yep, he is going to enter the health care fray with his own plan.

In addressing health care coverage, President Bush has decided to take the green carrot approach. What is the green carrot approach? He is trying to offer a financial solution through the tax code. This is a common approach with the government. They can’t make smoking cigarettes illegal, but they tax them to high heaven in an attempt to stop you. This is generally known as conduct modification through your bank account.

In the case of health insurance, the President is playing with the tax deductions. Currently, employers can write off whatever they spend to pay for health coverage for employees. The payments are also not taxable to the employee as income. The problem, however, is this doesn’t cover people who are not employed full time such as self-employed individuals.

President Bush’s answer is to create a tax deduction. Although the details are a bit murky, it appears that individuals will be able to deduct up to $7,500 for payments they make for health insurance. Families would get a bump up to $15,000. If you paid less than these amounts, you would still get to claim the full deduction. If you paid more than the deduction amount, your deduction would be capped at the $7,500 or $15,000 figure. Roughly 35 million Americans pay more than these amounts for health insurance coverage.

Regardless of your politics, the President should be congratulated on taking on the health care answer. Regardless of political affiliations, this is the kind of issue a President would typically only tackle if they were very popular. Trying to address it without such numbers takes a lot of political courage. Will it work our or is it even a good plan? We will have to see, but at least it is a start.

Home Health Care A Few Figures

Home Health Care A Few Figures

You don’t have to make the terrible decision to send one of your loved ones to a hospital or nursing home; there is always the home health care option! Just think, you might even be able to save money by having a professional come to your home to take care of someone who has been hurt.

Home health care, in the most basic sense, is where a trained agent will come in and do all of the things that a patient would have needed at the hospital, but in the convenient setting of a home environment, where friends and family can be around as well to help things.

Some of the options for this type of care include things like wound care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and patient and caregiver educational information. People can also deal with IV’s, injections, nutrition, and the monitoring of serious conditions that just require a watchful eye, and not scrutiny by high-paid hospital staff.

There are all sorts of agencies that have home health care options. You’ll find companies ranging from tiny neighborhood ones to major corporate ones, and the options that you need will be clearly defined when you talk to any of them for the first time. Just don’t be scared to ask questions.

The home health care staff will take care of a patients eating and drinking, check on vitals like temperature, breathing, pain levels, amount of sleep they get, heart rate, and blood pressure. In addition, they can take care of things like basic cooking and cleaning, depending on the program you’ve set up for them.

You’ll always be made aware of your plan of care as well. Essentially, this is just a list of every detail of your health and how it relates to an agent. Time frames, equipment use, medication details, things like that. If anything changes in your condition, your plan of care will indicate that, so you can keep a record of how things have progressed over time.

Conditions for the home health care service should be constantly improving as well. Every new day will have something that happens, and each challenge should be approached as a way for them to make the overall service better. Staff should always be polite and well-informed as well, giving everyone in the system a chance to be as happy as possible.

Now that you have a basic understanding of how home health care works, do a little homework to find if there are local places that fit you needs, and you know that you’ll be ready to make the right decision if you’re ever put in the position to make a call.

Health Care Survey Finds Costs Too High

Health Care Survey Finds Costs Too High

It isn’t too much of a surprise that many Americans are finding the cost of health care too high to be affordable. Having said that though, they are also happy with the quality of their health care.

It’s interesting to note that a recent survey of Americans about the health care system discovered that overall, people were pleased with the quality of the health care they received. On the other hand, the cost of health care was entirely a different matter. Cost is a flash point with many people in this recession and it should come as no shock that those being polled would respond to the higher costs of health care.

It’s not a secret that health care costs have gone up precipitously over the last few years, with seemingly no end in sight. Although with some of the recently announced changes to the system coming in 2010, the price pendulum may swing back to the point of being reasonable. And that’s the conundrum facing us today, the quality of our health care and what we should be expected to pay for it.

Two out of three people who were asked questions about their experiences with our health care system were pleased with the quality of care they received. With quality care however comes a hefty price tag, much like the saying, “You get what you pay for.” So it’s a bit of a dilemma for the system to also be condemned as not being very affordable, as in where does the system draw the line between quality and affordability? The poor affordability rating came from those who suffer from disabilities or other chronic conditions.

The number of people polled for this interesting survey was fairly representational of the American population at large, with close to 14% of those responding admitting they had no health care because they couldn’t afford it. This doesn’t address what they would do if they required health care and had to pay for the expenses incurred out of their own pockets. The respondents who did have health insurance mostly received it from an employer, who sponsored a group health care plan at their place of employment.

While the survey is valid in terms of being representational for the nation, it did not include a portion that asked people what they were willing to pay for quality health care. Quality health care and the skill to deliver it needs to be reimbursed in some manner, so the question is how to deal with that and ensure everyone has access to affordable health care.

Holistic Health Care Tips For Breast Cancer Patients

Holistic Health Care Tips For Breast Cancer Patients

The whole world comes to a standstill when someone comes to know that or she has breast cancer. Though there are many treatment procedures for the killer disease today, it becomes almost obvious that the doomsday is near. Leave alone the tremendous pain one has to bear with, the very fear of death makes living life an uphill task.

Adding complementary therapies in the form of lifestyle changes and alternative medicines to your treatment plan can help you feel better and improve your prognosis. Oncologists are of the view that when it comes to breast cancer, conventional treatment procedures like surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and radiation are unavoidable. But adopting a few holistic health strategies offer effective healing benefits. Here are some health care tips that make living with breast cancer a bit easier:

– Acupuncture: Stimulation of certain points on body activates key portions of the nervous system, resulting in the release of body’s own pain-killers and a boost to immune system.

– Dietary supplements: Apart from vitamins, minerals, and herbs, taking antioxidant supplements like turmeric help to negate the side-effects of chemotherapy. Other dietary supplements that show promise to breast cancer patients include curcumin, vitamin D3, and Maitake mushrooms.

Boosting Health Care Efforts

Boosting Health Care Efforts

Health care is not one-dimensional. There’s more to it than what takes place inside a hospital. Recognizing the need for a more holistic approach to health and well-being, community hospitals have come up with supplementary services for their patients, primarily in terms of education and training.

General Health Education

Taking care of yourself all boils down to knowing the basics of health. Every now and then, a person needs a refresher course on what needs to be done to keep the body in good shape. Community hospitals offer general health education classes, as well as lessons on alternative lifestyle methods that can boost one’s efforts to stay healthy.

First Aid Training

Knowing how to handle emergencies is a valuable skill, which is why community hospitals have first aid training sessions that their patrons can enroll in. Both children and adults can benefit from a few courses so they will know what to do when faced with a medical emergency.

Maternity and Neo-Natal Care Education

One of the most popular courses offered by community health care facilities like the San Joaquin hospital in Bakersfield, California is about mother and child care during pregnancy and after birth. The issues of maternity and neo-natal care are discussed in the hospitals’ regular sessions on the topics.

Disease Management

People who suffer from conditions such as diabetes can go about their routines normally as long as they manage their diseases well. To help them with this, San Joaquin hospital, CA and its counterpart facilities spread all over the country offer disease management courses. These courses cover diet requirements, lifestyle adjustments, therapies, and other related topics.

Getting access to these classes and trainings isn’t that difficult. Most of these sessions are offered for free, and participants only need to register for the programs. It is important to regularly check a community hospital’s schedule of events to know whether there are courses that one is interested in. In addition, a person can also request for a particular class that isn’t in the current list. Community health centers like San Joaquin hospital, CA are open to suggestions from their patients.

Pennsylvania’s Single Payer Health Care Bill

Pennsylvania’s Single Payer Health Care Bill

Pennsylvania is in a unique position. She has a Single Payer Health Care Bill, HB 1660, that has a great chance to eventually pass in the House.

Of all the State sponsored bills, this one is the strongest.

This is a solid bill, one Pennsylvanians can trust that insurance companies will be fully exempt from corrupting.

Democracy For America promoted house parties across the country November 14, where thousands of people watched Sicko, then listened to a conference call with film maker Michael Moore and DFA President Jim Dean for more than thirty minutes.

Or if people were watching on the West Coast, they tuned into the conference call before they watched the DVD.

In any case, a certain percentage of watchers had never seen the movie before, so Jim Dean and Michael Moore were careful not to divulge key movie points.

I saw Sicko for the third time that night and thoroughly enjoyed watching it with my Progressives For Pennsylvania friends, a handful of union leaders, and a few liberals I grew up with in my hometown.

The conference call itself was inspiring.

Michael Moore was asked about state sponsored versus federally sponsored bills, and which did he support. For instance, John Conyers and Dennis Kucinich have a National Single Payer Health Care Bill, H.R.676.

Moore said we need a National Single Payer bill, thus supported the Conyers/Kucinich bill. John Conyers has said he supports the bill here in Pennsylvania, HB 1660.

Having said that, and given the current stranglehold on anything good coming out of Washington these days, I believe we have no choice but to develop a model Single Payer Health Care Bill that other States and eventually the Country are free to adopt.

Another point in the call was how the propaganda machines like to stop all discourse on a real Universal Health Care Plan that covers all Americans minus Insurance Companies, by stating that such plans are Socialized Medicine.

Michael Moore said Single Payer is not Socialized Medicine, but rather is Christianized, Krishna-ized, Mohammad-ized Medicine because of the impetus for caring for every citizen in America in a true spirit of service.

The question arose about the supposed waits that people have in the Canadian health care system, (although Canadians in the movie told us that they really don’t have the waits that the propaganda machines in this country want us to believe).

Moore said that when 50,000,000 people are taken out of the health care equation, obviously our waiting times at the doctors, those of us with Health Insurance, will obviously be shortened.

When we add the 50,000,000 people back into the system, yes, we will have longer waiting times.

Isn’t this preferable to making Health Care unavailable to so many millions of citizens?

Governor Rendell of Pennsylvania has a Health Bill before the Pennsylvania House of Representatives called Prescription for Pennsylvania.
